Editorial Standards — Africa Pulse Media
Africa Pulse Media reports for readers across South Africa with a commitment to fairness, clarity and public service. Our journalism follows principles designed to build trust: rigorous verification, transparent sourcing, clear separation of news from opinion, and accountability when we fall short.
Accuracy and verification
- We verify information before publication. Reporters seek corroboration from documents, records, direct observation or more than one independent source whenever practicable.
- Headlines, standfirsts and social summaries must fairly reflect the story. We avoid sensationalism and correct any misleading framing.
- When data, statistics or technical claims are used, we link to original sources or provide clear attribution so readers can assess the evidence.
Sourcing and attribution
- We name sources whenever possible. Attribution allows readers to judge credibility and context.
- If a source asks to remain anonymous, editors will consider on-the-record alternatives first. Anonymous sourcing is reserved for situations where a named source would face real risk, legal jeopardy, or would be unable to speak at all — and where the information is essential and cannot be obtained otherwise.
- When anonymous sources are used, we explain the reason for anonymity and our efforts to corroborate the information.
- We do not pay sources for news information. Payment could compromise the integrity of the reporting.
Conflicts of interest and transparency
- Staff, contributors and editors must disclose relationships, investments or activities that could present a real or perceived conflict with coverage.
- We avoid assignments where a conflict cannot be managed. When unavoidable, we disclose the nature of the conflict to readers in the story or a visible notice.
- Sponsored content, partnerships and advertising are clearly labelled. Editorial decisions are made independently of commercial and promotional relationships.
Anonymous sources (detailed)
- Use of anonymous sources requires senior editor approval.
- Criteria for anonymity include: the risk to the source, the newsworthiness of the information, and lack of alternative on-the-record sources.
- We seek to corroborate critical details from anonymous sources with documents, independent witnesses, or public records; if corroboration is limited, that constraint is explained to readers.
Corrections, clarifications and retractions
- We aim to correct errors promptly and transparently. Corrections appear at the top or bottom of the online article and are summarized on our corrections page.
- Minor errors may be corrected with a brief note; significant errors that change the substance of reporting will receive a clear correction or retraction with an explanation of what was wrong and what has been changed.
- Readers who believe a story violates these standards or contains an error should contact our editorial redaction team at [email protected] or use our contact form at https://africapulsemedia.com/contact/. We review all complaints and respond as appropriate.
Separation of news and opinion
- News reporting is fact-based and aims to inform. Opinion, analysis and commentary express viewpoints and are clearly labelled.
- Editorials, op-eds and columns are identified as opinion and are not subject to the same sourcing expectations as news reporting, though they must still meet standards of honesty and good-faith argument.
- Letters to the editor and reader submissions are labelled and edited for clarity and accuracy; paid or sponsored viewpoints are disclosed.
Respect, privacy and legal considerations
- We treat the people we report on with fairness. When reporting could cause serious harm, we seek comment from affected parties and give them a chance to respond before publication whenever practical.
- We respect privacy and the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) in our handling of personal data; intrusive reporting must be justified by public interest.
- When using user-generated content or social media material, we verify origin and seek consent where appropriate, and we identify the material’s source.
Accountability and contact
- Our editors are accountable for upholding these standards across the newsroom. If you believe a story falls short of these principles, contact our redaction team at [email protected] and/or submit a concern via our contact form at https://africapulsemedia.com/contact/. We will acknowledge receipt and investigate.
