In a bold step toward sustainable urban mobility, CaetanoBus has been awarded a €11.6 million contract by Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto (STCP) to deliver 30 state-of-the-art electric buses. This new order represents the third collaboration between CaetanoBus and STCP, emphasizing a long-term partnership focused on reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and modernizing public transport infrastructure in Porto, Portugal.
The upcoming fleet will consist of 12-meter e.City Gold buses, each capable of carrying up to 88 passengers comfortably. These buses are designed with the latest in battery and drivetrain technology, ensuring optimal performance in busy city routes. Each vehicle is equipped with CATL BC5 lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with a total installed capacity of 465 kWh. The battery system allows rapid charging, making the buses operationally flexible and minimizing downtime between shifts.
Additionally, the buses feature CRRC’s advanced 6-in-1 drivetrain system, integrating motor, inverter, and transmission components into a single compact unit. This integration reduces weight, increases energy efficiency, and simplifies maintenance. Such technological advancements guarantee that Porto’s public transport network operates with higher reliability and lower environmental impact.
STCP currently manages a fleet of 446 vehicles, of which 15% are already electric. The introduction of these 30 new buses will raise the proportion of fully electric buses to 126, marking a substantial leap toward a zero-emission public transport network. By 2026, these buses are expected to be fully operational, serving key routes across Porto.
The new buses will be stationed at the Via Norte depot, where 15 dual charging points will be installed to support their operations. This expansion not only increases fleet capacity but also ensures that buses can be efficiently charged and deployed across the city. Residents and visitors will benefit from quieter, cleaner, and more reliable public transportation, which aligns with the city’s broader sustainability goals.
Urban air pollution remains a major challenge for cities worldwide. Porto’s move to electrify a larger portion of its public transport fleet will contribute to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter. Electric buses produce zero tailpipe emissions, helping to improve air quality and reduce the city’s carbon footprint.
Moreover, the shift to electric mobility supports Portugal’s national climate targets and the European Union’s broader objective of achieving carbon neutrality in urban transport by 2050. By adopting advanced electric buses, Porto is demonstrating a proactive approach to sustainable urban development, improving quality of life for residents and contributing to global environmental efforts.
CaetanoBus’s e.City Gold buses are not only environmentally friendly but also designed with passenger comfort and safety in mind. Spacious interiors, ergonomic seating, low-floor entry, and climate control systems make these buses suitable for all types of commuters, including people with reduced mobility. High-efficiency electric drivetrains ensure smooth acceleration and quiet operation, making journeys more pleasant for passengers.
Additionally, the buses are equipped with modern digital systems for fleet management, route tracking, and predictive maintenance. These technological enhancements reduce operational costs and allow for better service reliability, benefiting both the transit operators and passengers alike.
CaetanoBus has established itself as a leader in the production of electric buses across Europe. By integrating cutting-edge battery technologies from CATL and advanced drivetrains from CRRC, the company ensures its vehicles meet the highest standards of sustainability and efficiency. The ongoing partnership with STCP highlights CaetanoBus’s dedication to providing eco-friendly, technologically advanced, and passenger-oriented transport solutions.
The company continues to innovate in areas such as energy efficiency, battery lifecycle management, and digital connectivity. Its e.City Gold model has been successfully deployed in multiple European cities, setting benchmarks for reliability, passenger comfort, and environmental performance.
The arrival of 30 new electric buses represents a tangible step in Porto’s journey toward a fully sustainable public transport network. As urban populations grow, cities must address the dual challenge of reducing emissions while maintaining efficient mobility. By investing in electric buses, Porto is not only modernizing its fleet but also positioning itself as a leader in sustainable urban development.
Looking ahead, the city plans to expand charging infrastructure, explore renewable energy integration, and increase the proportion of zero-emission buses across its network. These initiatives reflect a holistic approach to urban mobility, emphasizing environmental responsibility, social inclusivity, and operational efficiency.
CaetanoBus’s delivery of 30 electric e.City Gold buses to Porto is a milestone for the city’s sustainable transportation strategy. The expansion of the electric fleet will reduce emissions, enhance passenger comfort, and reinforce Porto’s commitment to environmental stewardship. This initiative sets a strong example for other cities aiming to modernize their public transport systems while addressing climate challenges.
As cities around the world increasingly prioritize clean and efficient public transport, Porto’s efforts demonstrate that strategic investments in electric mobility can yield tangible benefits for both residents and the environment. With technological innovation and forward-thinking planning, the city is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable urban future.
